local + fluent
a celebration of spirited music and performance presented by arts mildura
8-10 March, 2018
museum of innocence, 31-33 Deakin Avenue, Mildura
local + fluent is a series of spirited music and performance events presented by Arts Mildura in the museum of innocence through March 8-10 2018.
Local + fluent opens on Thursday 8 March with FLOW: music, meditation and imagery, a collaboration of 5 women to coincide with International Women’s Day and includes the official launch of local Wentworth-based composer, Merrilyn Air’s new album “Flow” following on from the success of “River Tracks: Songs of the Darling”. A portion of funds raised from CD sales will be donated to Chances for Children. This event features Merrilyn Air, Bianca Spooner, Jennifer Gadsden, Jennifer Matthews and Jacquelyn Klose.
The music continues on Friday 9 March when Domenico de Clario and Matthew Fagan present Songs for Albert, inspired by Albert Namatjira’s love of American popular music of the 1930s, 40’s and 50’s, especially the songs interpreted by singers and musicians such as Louis Armstrong, Billie Holliday, Ella Fitzgerald, Irving Berlin and Duke Ellington. In the presentation of these songs the beats and chords of the accompanying keyboard and guitar are slowed considerably to better reveal the lyrics poetics.
The final performance in the local + fluent series features Gypsy Fire, with highly-acclaimed guitarist Matthew Fagan and amazing Czech violinist, Romana Geermans performing Gypsy Swing Jazz, Eastern European gypsy music, celtic, flamenco and Classical European repertoire on Saturday 10 March. The duo also share music composed from their profound musical partnership formed in Australia and featured on Matthew’s successful CD Indigo Moon, which still receives regular airplay on ABC FM.
Through co-ordinating these events Arts Mildura seeks to encourage local artists to perform a wide range of music to local audiences as well as to collaborate with visiting artists of note. This is the first of such events to be presented by Arts Mildura and we look forward to continuing to support local artists and their collaborations with visiting performers in the future.
