Artist Statement

Renae Pennicuik
Potter and Sculptor

My art practice consists largely of wheel thrown sculptural and functional pottery. I also enjoy sculpting my fellow human in clay. I have always been drawn to art and creative pastimes and whilst studying art after high school, I took to clay like we were long lost friends.

My main passion is primitive firing techniques. From the vibrant colourful outcomes achieved in Raku firing to the subdued smokey effects a pit firing creates. Techniques that are both skilful and contrived in some ways, and in others one surrenders to the nature of the actual fire itself.

Whilst I love the wheel and primitive firing techniques I also enjoy depicting people in sculptural forms, humorous character studies of the different people that make up our fascinating society.

I aim to keep striving towards my goals of future exhibitions, an open studio at my home and sales of my art through my website
